president george h.w. bush's health. where is netflix when you need it most, and the queen goes 3-d? hmm. very merry christmas to you. good morning. i'm veronica de la cruz. parts of the country are waking up to a white christmas. a nasty weather system col whip up dangerous conditions in the southeast. dylan dreyer has been tracking the storm for us. >> it's a little bit of everything. we are looking at a severe storm certainly possible. we've already had a tornado warning posted down through northern acadia parish in louisiana since lifted. but we are going to see more severe weather break out with a good chance of seeing some potential for tornados. we also have snow falling all across new england right now. heaviest in upstate new york. we still have the win themy mix back through the hartford area. we also stloe to keep an eye out for these storms where we do have a severe thunderstorm watch posted and eventually will see severe thunderstorm warnings get issued i'd say all across louisiana. all of those flashes of light, that's the cloud to ground lightning we're seeing. very strong

george h.w. bush said to be in high spirits this afternoon despite having to spend christmas and now possibly new year's in the hospital. gabe gutierrez standing by in houston. gabe, what can you tell us? >> hi there, craig. the former president remains in intensive care at methodist hospital. he's been here more than a month and the family spokesman says he is improving and that his interactions with the medical staff include singing. there is no word on what exactly he's singing, of course, but the former president first went to the hospital in early november with bronxitis a ibronchitis and after developing a nagging cough and the family hoped to have him home by christmas and that didn't happen, and he developed a fever and so doctors put him in the icu and they were reluctant to get details about his treatment and this thursday his chief of staff sent an e-mail to supporters telling people to put the harps back in the closet. the former president is in very high spirits although he's not expected to leave this hospital any time soon. his family, right now, says he's in guarded c

magazine. joe watkins, republican strategist and former aide to president george h.w. bush and mark glaze, director of mayors against illegal guns. so that was a lot, a lot to deal with, a lot of history of the nra. it's interesting because in the history of the nra it used to be sort of a sporting and hunting organization, training. they actually used to support gun control legislation. let's talk about what changed and mark, i know you are an expert in this. what changed about the nra itself in terms of its advocacy that made it an opponent of gun control? >> well, there -- thanks for asking, first of all. i think it's kind of the lingering question underneath gun policy. why doesn't congress, why don't state legislatures do more. the easy answer is a mythology has developed about the ability of the nra to kick elected officials out of office that is almost entirely untrue but is totally devastating to the work we're trying to do. this is a moment when we can draw attention to that. what happened over a period of decades is that there were power struggles within the organization and fin
